Illegal logs seized

by Jason Gerald

Pahang state: An attempt to ferry illegal-extracted logs nears the Sikh crematorium at Jalan Kuantan-Sungai Lembing on Saturday was foiled by a special enforcement team from the District Forestry Department.

After making the bust, a State Forestry Department officer lodged a report at the Kuantan police headquarters yesterday.

District police deputy chief Superintendent Lim Char Boo said according to the report, a team of enforcement officers from the department seized the lorry at about 5.30pm on Saturday while on patrol along Jalan Kuantan-Sungai Lembing.

"The team spotted the lorry emerging from an area near the crematorium and stopped the vehicle which was carrying 35 logs of various sizes.

Lim said upon checking, the officers found that the driver had no authorisation letter to transport logs.

"As he was unable to produce any tax payment records, the lorry was taken to the district forestry department in Kemuting to facilitate investigations.

"However, the type of logs and its value was not stated in the police report," he said.

It could not be established whether the lorry driver had been detained.

District forestry official Jamalullai Jaafar could not be reached for details of the seizure.

Meanwhile, The Malay Mail understands that the clearing on the one-hectare site began last week.

Checks at the site showed the land was totally cleared and there were some logs stacked in the middle.
