Malaysia praised for environs efforts

KUALA LUMPUR Sun 19. - British High Commissioner Bruce Cleghorn today commanded Malaysia's environmental protection effort, saying it has a good reputaion for its conservation programme.

He said Malaysia also succeeded in combining rapid economic development with environmental protection.

"Some 45 per cent of Peninsular Malaysia remains forested and the number of parks and conservation areas across the whole country has grown remarkably since I,was last posted here in the early 1990s,' he said at the to establish the Selangor State Park in Kemensah Heights, Hulu Kelang.

Malaysia is party to 15 international environmental agreements and plays an active part in World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), the Kyoto negotiations, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Flora and Fauna (CITES) treaty and the Convention on Biodiversity.

He noted that the park would be one of Malaysia's first multipurpose parks that would allow economic activities to continue within its boundaries while conserving the bio-diversity of the area.

"As such, it has more in common with the national parks in the United Kingdom such as the Peak District or the Norfork Broads than with other 'wilderness' parks in Malaysia.

"This is an important concept that helps to demonstrate that conservation can go hand in hand with development and improved quality of life."

When fully established, the park will be within easy reach of Malaysians for recreational and educational purposes.

It will help prevent flooding and enhance the lives of those living within the parks boundary, apart from offering a great tourist potential.

The British High Commission partly funded the project.

Cleghorn said the United Kingdom was involved in this project because our Prime Minister and Government are strongly committed to environmental issues around the world'.

Today's environmental problems, he said, were global and required like-minded countries to work together.

He said Britain would be participating in the Conference of Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity to be held in Malaysia in February.
