Felda plans to plant 1 million high quality timber seedlingsBentong (Pahang State) 10 Oct.- The Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) plans to plant 1 million high quality timber seedlings along all of Felda owned major roads nationwide with the aim to help sustain the country’s timber production. Minister of Land and Co-operative Development, Tan Sri Datuk Kasitah Gaddam said that all Felda’s roads will be planted with timber seedlings such as meranti, cengal, merbau and jati (teak) for a distance of 5,000 km. He said this step will also help to cater for the use of the local furniture industry as well as to generate income for the country. “We will obtain the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM)’s expertise to carry out the project,” he told reporters after launching Felda’s timber-tree planting project at Mengkarak, near here yesterday. Kasitah clarified that 1,000 timber trees have been planted at several Felda Gugusan Chemomoi land schemes and have been found to be successful.
