Malaysian Wood Industries Association

The Malaysian Wood Industries Association (MWIA), formerly known as the Timber Trade Federation, Malaysia (TTFM) was officially registered as an association on 7th June 1957, even before the Federated States of Malaya achieved independence. Since then, it has gone through numerous economic cycles and business trends in timber. Being pioneers of the industry, much of the reputation gained by the Malaysian timber sector globally is due to MWIA members. Over the years, with the firm guidance of its long-standing President, YAM Tunku Tan Sri Osman Ahmad, MWIA has grown into an association that is highly regarded by both its members and other timber-based associations. Representing various state-based sawnmillers' associations, it has also become an important reference and focal point for policy-formulation by the Ministry of Primary Industries and the agencies thereunder.

MWIA which originally comprising of mainly sawmillers, now represents businessmen from various sectors of the Malaysian wood-based industry. Over the years, many of the original members have diversified into downstream processing resulting in sawmills which are integrated with other secondary wood-based processing mills. The change of name in year 2000 mirrors the diversity of business interests that its members are currently involved in.

Today, through MWIA, the association is committed to strive harder for its members which currently stands more than 400. A more proactive programme has been formulated to serve the needs and requirements of its members. Working groups on raw material supply, technology and marketing have been established to provide solutions to issue-specific problems. These and other service-oriented promotional efforts, are undertaken to ensure that its members receive the best guidance in helping them benefit from the advent of e-commerce, k-economy and globalisation. With its new programme put in place, MWIA aims to be the leader in developing a united and integrated wood-based industry. Co-operation with other wood-based associations has so far resulted in the organisation of the highly successful Malaysian Timber Marketing Convention 1999. MWIA hopes to build upon this success to ensure that the Malaysian timber industry will achieve greater heights and continue to be one of the major foreign exchange earners for Malaysia in the new millennium.

Apart from individual members, MWIA also represents the following state-based associations:
