Malaysia has a comprehensive forest management system to ensure that the timber industry is managed responsibly in line with SFM best practices. With due diligence and careful documentation and use of evolved systems, each log produced can be traced to its original stump or at least to the forest of origin. Steps to further enhance verifiability for legality of source includes progressing towards 100% tree-tagging and computer tracking under a mandatory Chain-of-Custody scheme. Effective enforcement systems are installed to ensure that Malaysia’s forest agencies are supported by the Police and Customs Department to eradicate illegal forest practices. All these procedures enhance the legality of Malaysia’s sustainable forest management practices.
