MIFF Furniture Excellence Award 2005

THE MIFF FURNITURE EXCELLENCE AWARD IS AN ANNUAL COMPETITION HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MIFF SERIES SINCE 1999. THE COMPETITION WAS FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE NATIONAL FURNITURE DESIGN COMPETITION FROM 1988-1998 WHEN IT WAS ORGANISED BY THE MALAYSIAN TIMBER INDUSTRY BOARD THROUGH THE FURNITURE PROMOTION COMMITTEE COMPRISING DESIGN-RELATED AGENCIES AND THE MALAYSIAN FURNITURE INDUSTRY COUNCIL.

THE COMPETITION was migrated to the MIFF platform to encourage participation from local furniture manufacturers as well as to promote innovative designs in locally manufactured furniture. The competition this year consisted of six categories, namely Bedroom & Bedding, Dining, Sofa, Outdoor, Occasional and Office. There was also a Gold Award for the overall winner. A total of 85 entries from 56 exhibitors were received and evaluated by a panel of six judges based on three main criteria, namely innovation, aesthetics and functionality.

Chief Judge Mr. Mohd. Shaleh Mujir of the International Institute of Design Excellence, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM), Malaysia, said that the judges were impressed with some of the products manufactured utilising local materials and targeted towards a niche market. He called on local furniture manufacturers to add value to their products by incorporating 'Original Brand Name' (OBN). Having their very own brand name would not only generate more positive prospects in the future but would also increase their competitiveness in the global market," he added.
