Facts On The Forests Of Malaysia
Malaysia,
roughly the size of Norway, has a landmass of 32.86 million hectares, of which
almost 60% - representing 19.22 million hectares - is covered with natural
forests. Tree cover is further complemented by another 14% largely of rubber and
oil palm plantations. This 74% figure represents a land area the size of the
United Kingdom and makes Malaysia one of the most forested countries in the
world. This compares with 24.2% average tree cover in the EU; 21.6 % in Belgium-Luxembourgh;
9.8% in the Netherlands; 9.9% in the UK (FAO, 1997).
Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad has stated that Malaysia will
ensure that at least 50% of its landmass will remain permanently under forest
cover and has urged, particularly the developed countries to join in the
greening of the world.
