The construction sector in India has been on an upswing in the past few years. The bourgeoning Indian economy has attracted several MNC’s to set up base in India. This trend has seen the per capita income of India shoot to new heights in a short span of time. Thanks to the favourable interest rates and more attractive financial terms, construction companies have moved toward executing larger projects, leading to higher project and customer concentration. The country’s GDP recorded an annual growth rate of 8.6% in the quarter ended March 2010 and the industrial production rose from 13.5% in March 2009 to 15.1% in March 2010.

The construction industry in India is the second largest industry of the country after agriculture. The investment in construction accounts for nearly 11% of India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and nearly 50% of its Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF).

Newly emerged cities like Hyderabad and Bangalore have shown sky-high demand for commercial and residential properties. With the country all but recovered from the after effects of the global meltdown, most MNC’s have resumed hiring on a large scale. This trend is sure to have a positive effect on the demand for real estate as we expect more multinationals to enter India with full scale operations. Equally encouraging is the sudden growth of demand in the real estate sector in Kolkata. With more IT companies looking to start operations in this historic city, the surge in the demand for construction related activities has touched new heights.

Kuala Lumpur, March 8 - The Malaysian Timber Council (MTC) is organising its inaugural“MTC Global WoodMart 2010’ to provide a premier one-stop selling, buying and networking platform for suppliers and buyers of timber products from Malaysia and around the world. Tropical hardwoods, as well as temperate softwoods and hardwoods, will be showcased at the MTC Global WoodMart 2010.

The event, which was officially launched by the Minister of Plantation Industries & Commodities YB Tan Sri Bernard Dompok today, will be held on 19 – 20 October 2010 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

This is the first time that such an event has been organised in South East Asia for international timber suppliers and buyers to meet and conduct business.

Apart from facilitating business among local and overseas suppliers, agents, distributors, importers, manufacturers wholesalers and others in the supply chain, the MTC Global WoodMart 2010 will also help to promote and encourage the wider application and use of timber from Malaysia as well as international sources.

MTC’s CEO Cheah Kam Huan said the event is expected to be held once every two years and MTC hopes to get as many local and international exhibitors and participants to experience the MTC Global WoodMart.

“MTC has carried out international marketing efforts through our offices in London, Shanghai and Dubai to bring prospective buyers from our traditional markets in Western Europe, the USA, Japan and Australia, as well as emerging markets such as China, Russia, and countries in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Latin America to Malaysia.”

“Visits to forest areas, timber factories and timber related projects in Malaysia could also be arranged for these buyers and suppliers, as part of our value-added service to trade visitors.”

Cheah said one of MTC’s main objectives is to expand market opportunities for the Malaysian timber industry. As such, it is actively helping industry members to penetrate global markets, both traditional and emerging, through focused marketing and promotional activities.

“Our mission is to ensure the sustainability of the Malaysian timber industry by improving its competitiveness, enhancing market access and creating trade opportunities,” he added.

The MTC Global WoodMart 2010 will feature a wide selection of tropical and temperate hardwood and softwood products such as logs, sawntimber, plywood and panel products, wooden flooring, wooden decking, doors and windows, mouldings and furniture components. In addition, there will also be an “Innovative Products” section to showcase new products such as bio-composite boards made of palm trunks, kenaf and rice husk.
